Saturnia Spa is about 170 km from Rome
The Saturnia Spa and its sulphurous water that gush out from underground at a rate of 800 litres a second and at a constant temperature of 37° C, and these thermal springs were already well known by the Etruscans who had discovered “miraculous” virtues in the spring..
Then, starting from 280 BC, it was the Romans who took advantage of the benefits of the Satunia Thermal Baths. They were the first to create real dedicated buildings for the therapeutic exploitation of the spring; today many ruins can still be seen, which go to prove the work done by the Romans.
Thanks to the particular nature of this place: the water vapour, the escaping heat and the smell of the sulphur, many legends came to life during the Middle Ages.
Today, the Saturnia Spa is an enchanting thermal centre located at the feet of the medieval town of Saturnia and it is also surrounded by a century old park, typical of the “maremma” territory.
In addition to the thermal springs it is possible to gain free access to the Gorello waterfalls (or also called the Mulino – mill), which are 2 km from the town of Saturnia. Saturnia’s thermal springs derive from a volcanic crater (where the centre’s swimming pool can be found) and it then runs about 500 metres along a natural stream (known as the Gorello), where the drop creates a waterfall that laps up to an ancient mill and then in turn creates a series of natural rock pools.
These waterfalls are in the open countryside but they are easy to find. On the left hand side of the road, in the distance a view of the Saturnia waterfalls will open up in all their splendor, and this landscape is made even more suggestive by the cloud of vapour that endlessly accompanies this enchanted place. Soaking in the hot water of the natural pools is a real delight, and even more so during the colder months of the year.
