Ostia Antica is one of the most ancient sites of Imperial Rome and which has best conserved, its integrity.
The etymology of the word “Ostia” derives directly from the Latin word Ostium, meaning “river mouth” or outlet into the sea. Founded about 2500 years ago by the King Anco Marzio, it played an important role in the naval/military world and its port was fundamental for receiving supplies of grain for Rome.
Starting off from the Roman Port and going along the main road, the Decumanus Maximus, we will be visiting the ancient metropolis and the Piazzale della Vittoria square, to then go on to the Terme di Nettuno baths, built by Hadrian and decorated in magnificent and colourful mosaics.
Behind the baths is the local police station, which was also built in Hadrian’s time.
The tour will then move on to the Teatro di Agrippa theatre complex, built, in fact by Agrippa in the I century BC
After having visiting the Casa di Diana villa we shall visit Ostia’s political and administrative centre. We will cross the Forum and then take a look at the Tempio di Roma and Augusto temple, to conclude in the Giudiziaria Basilica: a large octagonal courtyard surrounded by Domitian and Trajan and through which it will be possible to admire the Tempio Rotondo temple.
