An unforgettable day visiting the Umbria region, which abounds in vineyards, olive groves and towns perched on hilltops
We shall head north out of Rome to Orvieto, a splendid medieval town, and an international tourist destination thanks to its magnificent cathedral, which is home to Luca Signorelli’s Last Judgement frescoes.
The Pozzo di San Patrizio (Saint Patrick’s well) is not to be missed. Then, following on towards the geographic heart of Italy we will go through Santa Maria degli Angeli, a small town which is home to a famous church.
A few kilometres on we shall come to Assisi, Saint Francis’s mystic city, still enclosed by its ancient walls, and nestled in the green foothills of Mount Subasio. Assisi’s pink stone houses which paint the landscape, the winding, narrow roads, the palaces of nobility and the flowered balconies will all leave you enchanted.
We will pay a visit to the Basilica of Saint Francis with its masterpieces by Giotto and Cimabue, as well as to Santa Chiara and its fascinating “borgo” of times gone by, suggestive niches and excellent cuisine. Browse around the small crafts’ shops of the old city. During the tour we shall stop for a typical meal in a chosen restaurant.
